Far Infrared Heat Therapy
(TDP Heat Lamps)
Warmth is an essential part of how we treat at Yin. We regularly use far infrared heat therapy, delivered via traditional TDP heat lamps, to enhance comfort, support circulation, and deepen the therapeutic effects of acupuncture.
Many of our treatment rooms are fitted with two TDP heat lamps, allowing us to gently warm areas such as the abdomen and feet, or target specific areas of pain, tension or stagnation. Clients often describe this as one of the most nurturing parts of their session – deeply relaxing, grounding, and incredibly cosy.
But this warmth isn’t just about comfort. From a Chinese medicine perspective, heat plays an important therapeutic role in supporting healing and restoring balance.
What Is Far Infrared Heat Therapy?
TDP heat lamps emit far infrared warmth, a type of heat that penetrates into the body rather than simply warming the surface of the skin or the air around you.
This gentle, steady heat is absorbed by muscles, joints and tissues, helping to support circulation and relaxation without feeling harsh, drying or overwhelming. It’s particularly well suited to acupuncture treatments, where the body is already in a deeply relaxed, receptive state.
TDP lamps have been used in Chinese medicine clinics for decades and are valued for their ability to provide consistent, therapeutic warmth that complements acupuncture beautifully.
Why We Use Far Infrared Heat During Acupuncture
Far infrared heat works hand-in-hand with acupuncture. While the needles stimulate specific acupuncture points and meridians, heat helps to:
-
Encourage blood flow and circulation
-
Relax muscles and soft tissue
-
Reduce pain, tightness and stagnation
-
Support the nervous system into a parasympathetic (rest and digest) state
Using heat during treatment can be especially supportive for people who tend to feel cold, tense, anxious or depleted – which is common in fertility care, pregnancy support, postpartum recovery, and during periods of chronic stress or burnout.
A Chinese Medicine Perspective on Heat
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), warmth is associated with movement, vitality and nourishment. Cold, on the other hand, is often linked with stagnation, pain, fatigue and depletion.
Far infrared heat is particularly helpful when treating patterns involving:
-
Cold in the abdomen or uterus
-
Qi or Blood stagnation (often experienced as pain, tightness or discomfort)
-
Deficiency patterns, where the body lacks warmth, energy or resilience
By gently warming the body, infrared heat helps to move Qi and Blood, soften areas of stagnation, and support the body’s natural healing processes.
This is one reason we often place heat lamps over the abdomen – an area central to digestion, hormonal balance and reproductive health in Chinese medicine – as well as the feet, which are rich in acupuncture points and deeply grounding.
And, of course… it just feels really good.
