Auricular (Ear) Acupuncture & Ear Seeds

We often incorporate both auricular acupuncture and ear seeds as part of a holistic treatment approach. Most commonly we use these to support the nervous system, hormonal balance and emotional wellbeing, however, these can also be used to focus on more specific conditions – constipation and high blood pressure as a couple of examples.

The ear is considered a microsystem in Chinese medicine, meaning it reflects the entire body. By stimulating specific points on the ear, we can influence a wide range of functions including stress response, sleep, digestion, pain regulation and reproductive health.

Auricular acupuncture involves the gentle placement of very fine needles into specific points on the ear during your treatment. We use this style of treatment alongside body acupuncture to deepen therapeutic outcomes. Many people find it particularly calming, as ear points are closely linked with the parasympathetic nervous system, helping the body shift into a “rest and restore” state.

Ear seeds are a non-invasive extension of this same principle. Small seeds, beads or sometimes tacks (very small needles) are placed on specific ear points and secured with a discreet adhesive patch. At Yin, we often send clients home with ear seeds already in place, allowing them to continue stimulating the treatment points for several days after their session. They can be gently pressed a few times a day to support ongoing benefits such as reduced stress, improved sleep, or symptom relief between appointments.

In addition to ear application, we sometimes use retained seeds or small adhesive press tacks on other areas of the body – such as the wrists, feet, or legs. These are used in a similar way, to gently prolong stimulation between appointments. This approach is commonly incorporated when supporting symptoms such as nausea, reflux or as part of our labour preparation approach, always as part of an individualised treatment plan.
