Electro-acupuncture
Sometimes acupuncture needs a little extra stimulation.
Electro-acupuncture is a technique where a very gentle electrical current is passed between selected acupuncture needles. It creates a light, rhythmic pulsing or tapping sensation and can be used to give certain acupuncture points a little more stimulation. At Yin, it is one of many tools we have available but it isn’t something we use in every treatment.
Most people who come to us prefer a gentler style of acupuncture, and that’s completely fine. We tend to bring electro-acupuncture into the treatment when we feel it may be particularly useful for what we’re working on.
When might we use electro-acupuncture?
Pain and pain management
Electro-acupuncture can be useful when we’re working with persistent or stubborn pain. The additional stimulation can be incorporated into an acupuncture treatment when we feel it may help with pain relief or when a particular area needs a little more attention.
Longer or irregular cycles
For some people experiencing longer cycles, electro-acupuncture may be incorporated into a fertility treatment to stimulate selected acupuncture points.
This is not something we routinely add to every fertility treatment. Your treatment is based on your individual cycle, history and what we’re seeing in the clinic.
Sperm health
Electro-acupuncture can also be used as part of some treatment plans for male fertility and sperm health. We may use it alongside acupuncture and other approaches where we feel additional stimulation may be useful.
What does electro-acupuncture feel like?
Despite the name, electro-acupuncture is usually much gentler than people expect.
Once the needles are in place, a small electrical current is passed between selected needles. You might notice a gentle pulsing, tapping or rhythmic sensation, and sometimes a small involuntary twitch in the muscles around a point. The intensity can be adjusted throughout your treatment and it should feel comfortable never painful or overwhelming.
And if it’s not something you’d like to try, that’s absolutely okay. There are plenty of other ways we can approach your treatment. It’s one of our tools, not something you need to choose
We don’t believe that more stimulation necessarily means a better treatment.
Acupuncture can be very gentle, and for many people that is exactly what they need. We have a range of techniques available and choose what we use based on your symptoms, your treatment goals and how your body is responding.
Sometimes that means a simple acupuncture treatment. Sometimes we might add heat, moxa, laser or electro-acupuncture. And sometimes less is more.
You don’t need to know which technique you need before you come in – that’s our job.
We’ll talk you through what we’re doing and why, and you can always let us know what feels comfortable for you.
